在一个伊甸园式的未来，一个女孩和她的父亲住在一座孤山的山脚下。他们拥有一些文明社会的残存物品：一些书，一块玻璃，一套燧石和钢，以及一把梳子。她的父亲希望她能够和自然和谐地相处，顺利长大成人，因为他们是最后的人类了，为此，他不断教给她各种知识——教女孩如何钓鱼、打猎，还教给了她季节和星星的秘密——让她做好准备。

但是，当女孩发现孤身一人身处一个未知的环境里的时候，能带领她回家的只有一头熊，只要她能学会倾听——他们必须穿过一片广阔的荒野，并经历各种艰难险阻。这是一个关于人类的脆弱、爱与失去的带有警示性的故事，也是对大自然之美令人惊叹的赞颂。
