萨勒诺自从2004年便着手采访塞林格的同事及其密友。从那时起，他与合著此书的作家大卫·希尔兹将采访的材料浓缩成一本口述自传，同时穿插着塞林格首度披露的照片。希尔兹是一位出过14本书的作家，他的作品曾被翻译成15种语言并多次获奖，其中包括国际笔会/雷夫逊奖以及国际笔会/辛迪加小说奖。萨勒诺合著过一些成功电影的作品，其中便包括2012年被广泛认可的奥利弗·斯通的电影《野蛮人》。
