Subject: Mayor Bloomberg Declared Tuesday, May 28th as “G.P. Putnam’s Sons Day"
I am excited to tell you that, in an official proclamation from The Office of Mayor, Mayor Bloomberg declared Tuesday, May 28, 2013 in the City of New York as “G.P. Putnam’s Sons Day” in recognition of the imprint’s 175th year of publishing. Mayor Bloomberg said, “The story of G.P. Putnam’s Sons has it all – entrepreneurship, determination, romance, big dreams. It is a classic New York City story, and on this wonderful occasion, today, we join Putnam’s extended family and many readers across the world in looking ahead to the next exciting chapter.”
From the New York bookstore where George Palmer Putnam began his career to the 23rd Street office where a young Theodore Roosevelt worked as an editorial assistant to today’s busy office in SoHo, the evolution of G. P. Putnam's Sons has been closely linked to New York’s history. In 1850, Putnam published the book considered "America's first bestseller" (The Wide Wide World) and has led the industry in bestsellers for decades. The Godfather, Lord of the Flies, and Lolita were all published by Putnam and, today, the imprint publishes Tom Clancy, Nora Roberts, Patricia Cornwell, Clive Cussler, Sue Grafton, W.E.B. Griffin, Stuart Woods, John Sandford, Catherine Coulter, and Dave Barry, to name just a few. From publishing what is considered the first American mystery novel (The Leavenworth Case, 1880) to publishing such bestsellers as The Hunt for the Red October and The Help, Putnam’s books continue to make a lasting impact on readers everywhere.
The world is very different than it was in 1838, and Putnam is too. That said, many core values live on -- an attendance to quality, honoring our authors, service to our readers, and a yen to create bestsellers.
From,
Ivan Held and all your friends at Putnam
